European Hotels and Your Passport

We thought this was interesting,,,

Why Do European Hotels Require Passports at Check-in?
by Amy Farley

There’s
a long tradition throughout Europe of statutes requiring hotels to collect
information on guests—including name, nationality, and ID number—enabling law
enforcement to cross-check for wanted individuals, criminals, or missing
persons. The European Union has since made such data collection a requirement
for hotels in member states. Most of this information is simply stored to be
made available to authorities upon request, though in certain areas (notably
Italy), it is regularly collected. In the past, some hotels would hold guests’
passports for hours or even overnight to manually complete the registration
process. Today, you usually just have to show it at check-in.

The No-Excuses Vacation Workout - Yahoo Travel

We found this article at YahooTravel
about how to get in some exercise while you travel…not that we’re trying to
make anyone feel guilty.

The
No-Excuses Vacation Workout
Don't chuck your fitness routine.
You can get a whole-body workout in your hotel room with five basic moves.

By Ellen Nordberg March 26, 2014 5:31 AM

With
a just few months until summer, spring break is no time to slack on a fitness
routine. (Especially if your family is heading to a beach destination anytime
soon.) Sure, it’s ridiculously easy to find excuses not to exercise when you’re
on a family getaway. The hotel doesn’t have a gym. You’ve got kids in tow. You
didn’t pack your exercise gear. And you’re on vacation, for Pete’s sake.

Instead
of chucking your routine until you get back home, you can get a whole-body
workout in your hotel room with five basic moves that do not require any
additional equipment. Even better, you can get the kids involved and make a
game out of assisting you. For optimal benefit, complete all five exercises as
a circuit with no resting.

PUSH-UPS

Level
One:
Place
your hands on the edge of the bed or desk shoulder-width apart, with your feet
on the floor. Assume a plank position by aligning your head, back and legs into
a straight line, then lift and lower your body using your arms with elbows out.
Do three sets of ten repetitions.

Level
Two:
Lift
your right leg a few inches off the floor as you do a push-up, then lift your
left leg with the next one. Continue, alternating legs as you go.

Kid
Challenge:

Have your child crawl under you with each lift. Count to ten together.

SQUATS

Level
One:
Stand
with your legs hip width apart. Push your hips back and lower down as if you’re
sitting in a chair, raising your arms straight above your head as you go. Be
sure to use the muscles in your butt and backs of your legs, not your thighs.
Do two sets of ten.

Level
Two:
Balance
on one leg for squats while lifting the other knee up to hip height. Make sure
your squatting knee tracks over the ankle and doesn’t extend forward out over
your foot.

Kid
Challenge:

Have your child stand in front of you with her back to you, holding a pillow or
a rolled up towel over her head. While in your standing position, have her hand
you the pillow. Complete your squat while your child runs around to crouch
behind you. Hand the pillow back to her through your legs, and then you both
return to your starting positions.

PULL-UPS

Level
One:
Lie on
your back under the desk, extending your arms up to grip the lip of the desk
with your palms facing in. Pull with your arms to raise just your upper body
off the floor. Do three sets of ten, or until fatigue.

Level
Two:
As you
pull up, raise both your torso and butt off the floor, balancing on your heels
as you lift.

Kid
Challenge:

Have your child sit at your feet and tap one foot at their discretion. When
your child taps your foot, raise that leg to increase the level of effort.

CRUNCHES

Level
One:
Lie on
your back with knees bent and hands back by your ears with elbows bent. Lift
your chest straight toward your knees ten times. Then, as you lift, twist at
the waist and reach an elbow to the opposite knee, and repeat for ten on each
side. Finish with one more set of ten straight crunches toward knees.

Level
Two:
As you
do the forward crunches, keep your legs raised in the air. For twists, keep
feet flat on the floor with and knees bent and raise the opposite knee to
elbow. Increase the number of repetitions to twenty for each set.

Kid
Challenge:

Have your child sit or stand at your feet. With either bent or straight legs,
hold a pillow in your hands and raise it over your head. As you rise up in your
crunch, bring the pillow over your head to hand off to your child. Roll back
down without the pillow, then retrieve it the next time up.

LUNGES

Level
One:
Stand
with feet hip-width apart, then alternate stepping forward with one leg and
dropping the other knee straight down. Make sure the front knee remains in
alignment over the ankle. Three sets of ten alternating both legs.

Level
Two:
As you
step forward in your lunge, try to tap your opposite hand to the ground while
maintaining your balance.

Kid
Challenge:

Have your child stand to your left side. As you lunge with your left leg, twist
across with your right hand to high five him. Do ten lunges, then have him
switch sides. If you have two children, station one on each side and alternate
high fives.

Staycation Los Angeles

Sometimes it's nice to just stay close to home. Here's a blog we found, about interesting places in Los Angeles to Staycate.

When it comes to staycations, there is no better place in the world than LA. The beach, city and mountains are all within a short drive of each other, and there is no reason you cannot begin your day in the surf, check out one of the great museums in the city, then cap the day off with some skiing all before the sun sets. When you have access to a city like Los Angeles, there really is no need to travel far for the best getaways.

Around every corner, there is always something to do in LA that will interest even the pickiest of travelers. Sunrise yoga on the beach in Santa Monica, surf lessons in Malibu, live performances on the Sunset Strip, shopping on Rodeo Drive, priceless works of art at the LACMA, zip-lining through the mountains, and amusement parks like Universal and Disneyland are all just a short drive away. For those who really hope to embrace Los Angeles for all the pop-culture it is known for, book a private backlot tour at one of the studios, or even a bus tour to see popular attractions, star homes and who knows, maybe even rub elbows with a few celebs.
Here are a few match-ups to get you started:
West L.A.

Whether you’re a art aficionado or not, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers something for everyone. The massive 7 building complex sits on 20 acres of land and truly offers a wide variety of activities making LACMA one of the top spots to visit in Los Angeles. There is something for everyone including talks and lectures, kids programs, art classes, film viewings and discussions and of course world class art. Be sure not to miss Urban Light which is one of the highlights of this museum. A St. Patrick's Day Tradition

Dyeing the River Green
for St. Patrick's Day

Sometime in the 19th century, as
St. Patrick's Day parades were flourishing, wearing the color green became a
show of commitment to Ireland, Meagher said.

In 1962 the show of solidarity
took a spectacular turn in Chicago when the city decided to dye a portion of
the Chicago River green.

The tradition started when parade
organizer Steve Bailey, head of a plumbers union, noticed how a dye used to
trace possible sources of river pollution had stained a colleague's overalls a
brilliant green, according to greenchicagoriver.com.

Bailey thought, Why not use the
dye to turn the whole river green on St. Patrick's Day? So began the tradition.

The environmental impact of the
dye is minimal compared with pollution from sewage-treatment plants, Margaret
Frisbie, the executive director of the advocacy group Friends of the
Chicago River
, said in 2010.

Rather than advising against the
dye, her group focuses on turning the Chicago River into a welcoming habitat
full of fish, herons, turtles, and beavers. If the river becomes a wildlife
haven, the thinking goes, Chicagoans won't want to dye their river green.

"Our hope is that, as the river continues to improve, ultimately
people can get excited about celebrating St. Patrick's Day different
ways," she said.

everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  R-emember

Best - Top 10 Business Class Airlines | Gayot

Best
Business Class Travel Per YahooTravel/ Gayot

Long gone are the
days when business class simply meant slightly larger seats and an extra
pillow. Today's top business class airlines are pulling out all of the stops to
make sure that passengers arrive at their destinations well-rested, well-fed
(you can forget that microwaved airplane meal), and looking forward to a
comfortable ride back home. With once-enviable amenities like fold-flat seats
and in-flight films becoming the standard for
intercontinental travel, more and more air carriers are looking
to distinguish themselves through luxurious cabins that incorporate on-board
lounges, personal entertainment systems and high-altitude haute cuisine. Read
on to discover which airlines really mean business when it comes to giving
their business class passengers the top-tier treatment.

Down Under with Air New Zealand Business Premier

New Zealand may be one of the most
geographically-isolated nations in the world; however, this Kiwi air carrier
will have you feeling right at home with its comfy 22-inch leather armchairs,
premium on demand audio and video, and convenient self-service refreshment
areas. An amenity kit provides passengers with travel basics such as eye cream,
lip balm and moisturizer, socks, eyeshades, toothbrush kit, earplugs and a pen.
Feel the need for some company on your long-haul flight? Your separate ottoman
footrest also doubles as a "visitor's seat," making it easy to invite
a guest over for a glass of fine New Zealand wine.
After a dinner focusing on fresh New Zealand produce and regional flavors,
recline your chair to its fully lie-flat position, put on your complimentary
noise cancellation headphones, and get some much-needed rest before your big
adventure Down Under!

Gourmet
Dining Onboard Delta BusinessElite

While
heightened security measures, routinely overbooked flights and the collective
belt-tightening of the airline industry in response to rising fuel costs have
all conspired to make American air travel a pain, at least one airline is doing
its part to pamper frazzled passengers. With Delta's BusinessElite class,
guests are given the luxury treatment from check-in to baggage claim, with
accelerated security, priority boarding and expedited luggage retrieval all designed
to minimize the hassle of travel. On board, kick back in front of one of 250
available movies or 150 TV programs, or, on domestic flights, stay connected
with in-flight Internet service. Multi-course dining menus come courtesy of top
toques Michelle Bernstein (Michy's, Sra. Martinez) and Michael Chiarello (Bottega), and feature wine pairings from
Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson. Once you're stuffed, dream easy with
complimentary noise-cancellation headphones and a full-size pillow.

132
Destinations and More at Emirates Airlines

When it
comes to high-altitude, high-class travel to Dubai and 131 additional destinations, Emirates Airlines literally soars above the
competition. Live it up on your long-haul flight with massaging seats,
complimentary Champagne and gourmet canapés and meals.
Forget the flimsy plastic food tray — five-course lunches and dinners come
served on bone china tableware with fine linen and flowers. After dinner, head
over to the onboard lounge for cocktails and conversation with your fellow
travelers. However, should you become too engrossed in one of the 1,400
entertainment channels playing on your personal widescreen TV, feel free to
grab a cold drink from your seat's built-in mini bar.

Luxury
in the Sky Onboard Etihad Airlines Business Class

The
national airline of Abu Dhabi boasts all of the luxury amenities that one would
expect from the flag carrier of the oil-rich emirate. The 1-2-1 seating
configuration, available on all of the airline's wide-bodied aircrafts, gives
direct aisle access to each guest, while a privacy shell around every flat bed
seat ensures uninterrupted rest and relaxation. For dinner, consult the Food
and Beverage Manager for dining options and wine pairing suggestions. Brought
in from the world's best restaurants, these highly-specialized individuals
undergo extensive training in order to become intimately familiar with the
onboard menu. Luckily, the luxury treatment doesn't end when the wheels hit the
tarmac. Upon arrival, Pearl Business Class guests receive the added convenience
of complimentary door-to-door limo service, complete with a personal chauffeur.

Culinary
Delights Aboard Japan Airlines Business Class

After the
hassle of getting to the airport and through security, settle into Japan
Airlines' business class cabin, a step above most thanks to its excellent,
varied dining options and above-par relaxation opportunities. Most seats slide
down into a fully flat bed position and feature a USB port, power outlet,
noise-cancelling headphones and an LCD monitor so you can listen to pop tunes,
play board or video games, and watch movies or traditional Rakugo-style
Japanese comic monologues. Before arrival in select cities, you will be served
a warm breakfast and may choose between a Japanese- or Western-style meal that
varies according to season and flight. Past selections have included simmered
potato and chicken with light soy sauce, carrot mousse and poached lemon
prawns. Ask a flight attendant for an amenity kit so you can freshen up before
your next big adventure with a moisturizing mask, eye mask and eye refresher.

Safety
First with Qantas Airways International Business

In Barry
Levinson's 1988 film, Rain
Man
, Dustin Hoffman's quirky title character will only fly Qantas — and for good reason. Not only is the
Australian air carrier consistently named one of the world's safest airlines,
as the simple yet sagacious Rain Man points out, it is also one of the most
flyer-friendly. Boasting an in-flight bar and a sumptuous dinner menu created
in conjunction with leading Australian restaurateur Neil Perry, Qantas takes our favorite on-land
luxuries (literally) to new heights. After dinner, make sure to settle in for
the night with your own personal on-demand entertainment system and a quick
massage courtesy of your fully-adjustable, fold-flat "skybed."

Oman
Air: Leading the Digital Vanguard in the Skies

In 2010,
Oman Air became the first airline in the world to provide both mobile
phone and Wi-Fi Internet service to its passengers. But the reason this airline
made our list is because of the state-of-the-art business class seats
found on the Oman Airbus A330. These 77.5-inch long, lie-flat chairs offer
electronically controlled backrests, leg rests and seat-depth adjustors while
the 1:2:1 seating layout of the cabin allows every passenger direct aisle
access. Besides lie-flat chairs with privacy screens, business class passengers
enjoy an extensive menu of modern and traditional cuisine as well as signature
Arabic dishes. In regards to in-flight entertainment, seventeen-inch
entertainment monitors installed in each seat’s front partition are fully
compatible with personal electronic devices, so passengers have access to their
private movie collections on their individual seat displays!

Unparalleled
Meal Service from Singapore Airlines

Start your
Singapore vacation off right with a flight
aboard the tiny Asian city-state's luxurious national air carrier. On board,
passengers are pampered with gourmet entrées and snacks, Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve Champagne and coffee drinks such as espresso and cappuccino.
Featuring an elegant seasonal menu created by an international panel of chefs
including Suzanne Goin, Singapore Airlines' meal service
ranks among the best in the skies, with gourmet dishes providing passengers
with an extra-special in-flight experience.

Thai
Airways Royal Silk Class: Travel Lavishly

Thai Airways' Royal Silk Class invites
travelers to live like a king on long-haul flights to Asia and around the
world. Passengers enjoy restaurant-style, multi-course meals served on
porcelain place settings, and are given an extensive choice of fine wines,
premium spirits and vintage ports
and liqueurs to wash down their delectable
dinners. In addition to enjoying standard in-flight entertainment options,
guests can also brush up on a foreign language or even practice meditation with
the interactive, new audio-video-on-demand system; however, with Thai Airways'
Zen-like business class cabin, the idea of needing a video program to help find
inner peace may seem a bit superfluous.

Upper
Class Flying Courtesy of Virgin Atlantic

Virgin
Group founder/multibillionaire mastermind Sir Richard Branson is intent upon
changing the way we view luxury travel — and if Virgin Atlantic's posh Upper Class cabin is
any indication of what he has in mind, we say bring it on! Offering first class
amenities at a business class price, the appropriately-named Upper Class
provides guests with their own private suite, complete with a large center
table, multidirectional 10.4-inch TV and ottoman/guest seat. Looking to get
some rest before the big business meeting? Consider booking in the
specially-designated "Snooze Zone," which features dim lighting and
service designed to minimize interruption for sleepy travelers.

New York State Wine Experience Now a Limo-Chauffeured Event

Ever had a hard time finding a good designated driver for your rambling countryside wine tour? An upstate New York bed and breakfast is about to make this a lot easier for you by providing a chauffeured-limousine car service along the Shawangunk Wine Trail for visitors to the region’s annual Pasta Primo Vino weekend happening on April 12th and 13th.[related]

Participating wineries this year include Adair Vineyards, the Benmarl Winery, Brimstone Hill Winery, Palaia Vineyards, Robibero Winery, and Whitecliff Vineyard. The offerings are diverse, but because the route is self-guided, many patrons don’t make it very far through the trek before dropping out from intoxication. A car service may be a good way to circumvent the problem this year around.
Aside from the obvious luxury wine-experience lure, the Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast wants guests to drink and dine responsibility during the weekend event which caters to wine lovers with its 14 wineries and pasta lovers with specially-prepared signature pastas offered along the Shawangunk Wine Trail.  While there are several car services on offer along the route this year, visitors who want the Caldwell House limo experience should reserve their White Glove Wine Getaway, which will include a fully guided trail tour in a limo that fits 8 to 10 people, and an on-board cooler stocked with refreshments.
The getaway package also comes with a two-night stay at the B&B and a two-day admission ticket to the trail.  Package prices start at $759, though if visitors would like to book for bigger groups they should contact the Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast directly at     1-800-210-5565.

Santa Barbara is gearing up for its first Food and Wine
Weekend from June 6th to the 8th — a three-day culinary extravaganza
celebrating the life of its most famous resident, world-renowned chef and
author Julia Child who spent her final years in the city.[related]

Teaming
up with The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts
and Edible Santa Barbara, the Bacara Resort and Spa will host the event that
will give food-lovers an experience of the best restaurants, wines, and
artisanal treats the region has to offer.

Exploring
Santa Barbara County from the sea to Santa Ynez, the festival will offer
visitors cooking classes, wine receptions and tastings, and a chance to get up
close and personal with local food producers. A special highlight of the
weekend is set to be a tribute to Child. A portion of the proceeds from the
event will go to benefit the Julia Child Foundation.

The
Bacara Resort is offering overnight packages for the weekend including a
two-night stay at the resort, and tickets to the glitzy opening night wine
reception. Tickets for the actual festival range from free to $250.

Best Time to Book a Flight

The Best Time To Book
A Plane Ticket, According To New Study

The answer? Are you ready? Are
you reeeally ready?
Fifty Four days before takeoff is, on average, when domestic airline
tickets are at their absolute lowest price. And if you don’t hit 54 days on the
head, you should usually book between 104 to 29 days before your trip -- within
the "prime booking window"
-- for the lowest possible
prices. In this window, ticket prices typically hover within $10 of the lowest price they"ll ever reach
.

At least that’s what the data
from 2013 tells us.

The folks at CheapAir spent the last year analyzing over four million airline trips. They tracked ticket prices from
320 days before takeoff all the way up until the day before, calculating
precisely which day each one hit its lowest point.

Air travelers tend to believe
they’ll find the lowest of low prices when they book “at the last minute.”
This, according to all present data, is one hundred percent false.

The researchers found that, on
average, a ticket was at its highest price o
n the day before the flight.
The second-highest price was two days before the flight, the third-highest was
three days before… and so on, all the way to 13 days before the flight.

This pretty much solidifies the
rule that you should NEVER book your ticket within two weeks of a flight… a
mistake that 36 percent od CheapAir users
made when planning their trips.

While the researchers found that
54 days was indeed the magic number for booking on average, they’re quick to
point out that this isn't a hard and fast rule:
your flight’s “best price”
window depends a lot on the specific trip you’re taking.

If you’re going somewhere
incredibly popular at an incredibly popular time -- like spring break in
Florida, for example -- you should book well before the “prime booking window”
begins. When there’s constant, strong demand for a flight, the researchers explain
, airlines have no incentive to
lower ticket prices as time goes on. The same principle holds true for flights
to hard-to-reach airports in small cities: there’s little airline competition
here, so ticket prices don’t drop nearly as much over their lifespan.

Foreign countries are incredibly
popular destinations with hard-to-reach airports, so the researchers suggest
booking much earlier than the 54 days recommended for domestic flights.

Oscar Cuisine

In honor of the Oscars, here is an article we found at Yahoo News:

Star Food

On the glitziest night of the year, those celebrities who do deign to eat
will sip shots of carrot orange gazpacho and nibble on crispy lobster dumplings
and popcorn-topped panna cotta.

Those are among some of the 50 dishes that will be on offer Oscar night from
the chef known as the caterer to the stars, Wolfgang Puck.

Celebrities who’ve stuffed, tucked and shimmied their way into their dresses
for the televised portion of the night may choose to celebrate their wins by
letting loose and tucking into hors d’oeuvres like crispy lobster shrimp
dumplings with five spice, bite-sized fried chicken with white grits and mini
American Wagyu burgers.

For the legions of celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Ellen DeGeneres, Jared
Leto, Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman who shun all animal products, Puck has also
created vegan dishes like carrot orange gazpacho shots, taro root tacos with
avocado, and butternut squash with farro and wild rice.

A few of Puck’s signature Oscar bites will also return, including smoked
salmon Oscars and chicken pot pie with shaved black truffles.

To cap off the night, stars will be offered sweet bites like
chocolate-dipped strawberry cheesecake pops and citrus panna cotta with
chocolate popcorn.

A cake will also be prepared to honor Puck’s 20th consecutive year of
catering the Governors Ball.

The Academy Awards is scheduled for Sunday, March 2 and will be televised in
